TRAVEL & LODGING

On-Site Camping

Group Camp Option ($5):  Choose this option during checkout while registering.  You can choose to camp at the group campsite in the Strouds Run State Park Campground.  We have rented the entire group campground for Friday and Saturday night of the Thunderbunny weekend.   There is room for 150 campers so it is a great way to socialize with fellow Thunderbunny runners!  Be ready for a true camp experience though as there is no flush toilers, electric, or showers; don't worry, the group site features a swell-smelling pit toilet, a water spigot, and bon fires!  The cost is just $5 per tent, so bring the family, just make sure you select this option while registering.

Individual Camp Sites:  You need to arrange this yourself with Strouds Run State Park.  CLICK HERE.  Strouds Run State Park has over 70 individual campsites for rent all within a half mile from the Thunderbunny race start/finish area.  Sites are non-electic and there are no showerhouses, but the campground has running water and pit toilets.

Air:

There is no airport that directly serves Athens. The most convenient and closest is CMH (Columbus, OH), about an hour and 20 minutes north-west) and most locals fly in and out of CMH when traveling. It's a moderate-sized airport and is easy to navigate, especially if you are used to a major hub in a big city. You can also sometimes find deals into Parkersburg, WV (40 minutes away) or Charleston, WV (1:40 away), but be warned that these are smaller airports and rental car options might be limited. Dayton (2:15) and Cincinnati (2:30) are generally cheaper options, but double your commute times.

Rental cars are generally pretty cheap in Ohio... and the drive from Columbus to Athens is spectacular, as you drive from the glaciated central part of Ohio to southeast, and into the hills of the Ohio Valley and Appalachian foothills.

Car:

No matter how you approach Athens by car, it'll be a beautiful ride. Athens is served by St Rt. 33 from the north and south and 50 from the east and west. We could bore you with exact directions, but since everyone has Google Maps of WAZE these days, we'll save everyone the trouble of reading through the directions. Click the map below for reference.
